The Director and Office Manager attended the Conference March 7th-10th There were over 1,200 delegates from 14 countries at this event, such as Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Holland and South Africa to name a few. By the way they estimate there is currently 300,000 people in Canada with FASD, which to me indicates Australia, would have similar levels albeit hidden and unrecognized.

One interesting leaflet we picked up was about a DVD available called: FASD and the criminal Legal system are we criminalizing disability. Featuring court, prison and legal professional, family members and a young person with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, the video discusses key issues relating to FASD and the legal system. I wonder how long before Australia actually begins to really address FASD. Another question one has to ask is are the kids that are getting picked up in Adelaide the Juvenile Gang of 49 have they been checked for FASD or they part of Australia’s hidden Criminalized disabled. The Canadians have guidelines for diagnosis when I was researching for the FASD flipchart for ADAC Australian Government has still not embraced the concept; that alcohol is poisonous to pregnant mothers the Canadian guidelines have over 50 references of peoples research. The Interesting thing is that in Canada the Government owns most of the Liquor outlets so maybe that is why they are able to influence the Alcohol Industry, the liability lies with the Government.
